Sequel was meant to hit theatres on July 3,2015.There are two reasons why this sequel date was pushed back.
First one that is in 2015 looking pretty crowded with superhero film sequels and Jurasssic Park is coming out the same year.
Another explanation is that Roland Emmerich, the director of the original film, on record saying that is written two versions of scripts.One script includes Will Smith's character or other doesn't. However is still unknown if Will Smith is willing to commit to the project.
At one point there was a rumours that Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman would be willing to reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel. However that is still a mistery. NO wonder that at this point it’s no surprise they’ve pushed it back another year.
However if film will be released in 2016 they can celebrate 20th anniversary since last time aliens attacked them. Hopefully they will release some sort of special edition to tie in with the release.
