When Chucky "Invaded" WCW

Oh 1998, how we miss you. Bruce Willis' Armageddon was dueling with Deep Impact in cinemas while Titanic was completely dominating any and all competition, Europe agreed on the single currency the Euro, and the WWF and WCW was at the height of the Monday Night Wars.

But, there was something just as poignant happening as well. The fourth entry in the Child's Play series, Bride of Chucky, was gearing up for its release and that sucker, Chucky, was getting everywhere, including the world of professional wrestling. So, with the Child's Play reboot hitting cinemas this Friday, the 20th June, I thought it was the perfect time to take a peek at when Chucky invaded WCW.
It was October 12, 1998, and WCW Monday Nitro was on the air on TNT. Rick Steiner, the aptly named "Dog Face Gremlin" was in the ring engaging in an interview with the late, great "Mean" Gene Okerland when all of a sudden, Chucky, yes, THE Chucky from the Child's Play movies was front and centre on the "Turner Tron," basically the large video screen or for those of you more familiar with the WWE, the Titantron.

And so, there it is, Chucky, who is being voiced by the ever awesome Brad Douriff, on the video screen as it begins cutting a promo on Rick Steiner where it hopes that Rick's brother Scott wins in their upcoming match, all the while plugging the latest Child's Play film, Bride of Chucky. The doll even got a couple of insults in towards Okerland, and he just hammed it up. It was a little bizarre, but it was a ton of fun, a little random, but so was WCW more often than not.

And sadly this is where it ends. There was no follow-through, the angle went nowhere, it was to simply plug the movie. Time Warner owned WCW and New Line at the time, and thought it was a great way to promote the film on one of their own shows. And, well, why not. Just a shame that we had weeks of this weird laughter on previous episodes of Nitro for just a small promo. Still, it was fun while it lasted, just a shame that WCW closed its doors for good just 3 years later.

What did you think of Chucky's brief appearance in WCW?
