1) Alien, 1979
Chest burst scene.
This scene was such an iconic scene in Alien, I think it set the stage for the Alien franchise, it definitely plays on the fear of having foreign bodies/parasites taking over the body. John Hurt as Kane was incredible, the fear in his eyes really hit me first. This is one of the scenes in sci-horror that will go down in history.
2) Misery, 1990
Hobbling scene.
Misery was on my watch list for ages, I had already seen Needful Things, IT and Cujo all based on books by Stephen King. I knew that suspense was going to be a big part of the movie but I wasn't prepared for Kathy Bates portrayal of Annie Wilkes.
Her intensity and obsession over writer Paul Sheldon is horrifying and it gets worse throughout the film, one of the climatic moments is where she takes a sledgehammer to his knee caps. Even typing that makes me cringe.
3) Gerald's game, 2017 (Another Stephen King movie adaptation)
Degloving scene.
Before I watched this movie I managed to avoid any spoilers so wasn't sure what I was going into. It started off as a weekend getaway for a middle-aged couple who were trying to reconnect.
During the middle of a romantic session Jessie Berlingame and Gerald Berlingame use some restraints and Gerald handcuffs Jessie to the bed posts. Halfway through a love making scene, Gerald has a heart attack and passes away.
Jessie lays in the bed for a few days trying to think of ways to escape and finally uses a glass that she knocked from a shelf to "deglove" her hand and free herself from the handcuffs. Not for the faint hearted
4) The Fly 1986
Seth eats a donut.
There are so many cringe worthy moments and squeemish scenes, but the one that really gets to me, still to this day is where Seth Brundle, (halfway through his transformation into Brundlefly) he vomits over a donut to eat it. I couldn't eat donuts for ages after watching this scene. The prosthetics were incredible, they still stand up today.
5) Hannibal, 2001
Eating brain.
The first time I ever saw this movie was when I went into my brothers room and he was watching it. This scene was the first thing I saw of the movie and I felt nauseous. I still find it really hard to watch.
Dr Hannibal Lecter has cut the scalp of Paul Krendler, showing his brain and he cooks it and feeds it to him.
6) Frozen, 2010
Jumping from a ski lift.
I went into this movie thinking it wouldn't have any effect.
I had the complete opposite, It starts with three skiers traveling up a chair lift which breaks down and have to make life or death decisions.
Trapped on a lift, freezing temperatures, no escape.
One of the skiers jumps to the ground unaware that the snow below has frozen solid, breaks both his legs on impact. The sounds, the images it's hard to shake off.
7) Cabin Fever, 2002
Shaving scene.
When you hear the name Eli Roth, you know it's gonna be graphic.
A group of friends take a trip to a cabin for a long weekend, the water has become infected with a flesh eating virus and slowly starts infecting the friends one by one.
Most of the scenes are pretty graphic but the one that stood out to me is when one of the friends is shaving her legs and skin peels off. Definite ick factor.
8) The Ruins, 2008
Getting it out.
A parasitic plant unleashes hell on a group of friends back packing through some ruins.
One of the scenes that really got to me is when one of the friends starts hacking at herself to get all traces of the plant out of her. Truly disturbing. It's so sad aswell which makes it even more shocking.
9) Saw 3, 2006
Blended pig.
As I'm speaking about icky scenes I have to include a scene from the Saw franchise.
A man is chained to the bottom of a tank and rotten pig carcasses are blended and poured over him. I don't think I have a particularly weak stomach but this scene made me quite uneasy
10) 127 hours, 2010
Arm amputation.
I have left this one till last as it's based on a true life tale of one Aron Ralston, a mountaineer and explorer, who gets trapped by a boulder and has to amputate his own arm to save his life.
The sound effects when he tries to cut through the nerves is like nails on a blackboard, the sound goes straight through me.
This scene was made incredibly well and James Franco showed his true acting ability.
So these are my top 10 scenes, what are your thoughts? What would be yours?
Thanks for reading.
