A Trip to Racoon City.

Following on from my last post on Death Stranding, I thought I would take a trip down memory lane and revisit the first game that introduced me to survival horror.
The game in question has become a world wide phenomenon, with multiple games, several film releases and merchandise, and I would even say it has a cult status.

Of course I am talking about the franchise Resident Evil.

Resident Evil is a survival horror developed and released by Capcom originally for PlayStation 1 in 1996 and was eventually available to the Sega Saturn and P.C.

Then re-released twice on the PlayStation in the form of a directors cut.

A game-boy colour version of Resident Evil was planned in 1999 but was later cancelled by Capcom stated that the game was of poor quality.

The premise of the game is based around a special task force known as S.T.A.R.S Alpha team two of the members Jill Valentine and Chris Redford are sent to Racoon City to investigate the disappearance of some of their colleagues Bravo team who vanished whilst investigating multiple "cannibal homicides". Once they arrive they are chased into an abandoned mansion by what can only be described as terror dogs, only then they realise they are not alone in the mansion.

The aim of the game is to uncover secrets around the mansion to find out what happened to their missing colleagues, puzzles and traps galore along with a host of mutated monsters.

The reason I loved this game so much was that it was such a challenge and incorporated such elements of horror that I had never seen before, the suspense was a real thrill especially when you go to open a door and the camera pans to the door knob turning it very slowly unaware of what lies on the other side. The soundtrack was superb just this eerie music from room to room, I will never forget the scene in the mansion where you are walking down a hallway and mutant dogs jump through the window, that was just brilliant and I think it set the standard for survival horror today.

Let me know your thoughts? what was the first horror video game you ever played?

Thanks for reading!
